4 Simple Tips for First Time Gym Goers

Tip 1: Choose the right outfit

Our first simple tip for first time gym goers is to make sure you choose the right outfit. You want to make sure whatever outfit you wear offers the right amount of stretch, support and style for whatever exercise you’re choosing to do.

If you’re just at the start of creating your activewear wardrobe then we’d recommend including a variety of leggings, shorts, sports bras and crop tops. This means you can mix and match the pieces to suit whatever you choose to do that session.

Tip 2: Have a plan

Our next simple tip for first time gym goers is to have a plan before you arrive. This doesn’t need to be anything too fancy, just a simple plan of action for when you set foot in the gym. Of course, this can be hard if you’ve never visited the gym before. If that’s the case, on your first visit you should take a walk around the whole gym and try to find a quiet corner with a mat and some dumbbells.

Once you’ve found your workout spot, observe the different machines on offer in your gym. Once you’re a little more familiar with the gym you can take a look at some online fitness influencers or PT’s for some exercise inspiration. Then for your next trip you’ll be able to plan effectively before you go.

Tip 3: Try a class

The third simple tip for first time gym goers is to try a class. Most gyms will offer a variety of classes with your membership, so make sure you find out what these are and when they’re on! Classes are a great way to grow confidence doing new exercises and learning more about different workout styles.

If you don’t feel like going to a class by yourself, why not take a friend? This way you’ll motivate each other to go while having fun and socialising at the same time. If you want to take it that step further you could even coordinate your gym outfits!

Tip 4: Set a goal

Our final tip for first time gym goers is to always set a goal. This shouldn’t be a huge (unrealistic) goal, like becoming a fitness fanatic overnight, but something achievable to keep you motivated. You can set short and long term goals and you should make sure to tailor these to whatever exercise you’re doing.

For example, if you love to run then your goal could be to achieve 5km in a certain amount of time. Or, it could be to increase your distance from 5km to 10km.
